The Three Releases

No, this is not the movie starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short, but it does involve three DVDs and some major talent: Rev. Ken Klaus and Bruce Wurdeman. They star in the compilation sets of The Baloney Shop and "Stuff They Didn't Teach Me in Sunday School."

Season three of The Baloney Shop features Pastor Ken Klaus, Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour, in a ten-episode DVD, which captures the undisputed "king of cutlets" in full swing, wielding his baloney-dissecting cleaver on far-fetched ideas, questionable sportsmanship, left-field viewpoints, angels unaware and more.

In "Stuff They Didn't Teach Me in Sunday School ... About the Period of the Kings," number four in the series, Bruce Wurdeman charts significant events from King Saul to King Hezekiah. While the power and influence of the divided monarchy of Israel and Judah expanded under its leaders, these centuries also witnessed grievous depravity and infidelity to its Creator. Still, God remained true to His chosen people, guiding their history, forgiving their sins and renewing His promise to send a Messiah. Watch as God works His divine purposes through prophet, priest and king in "Stuff They Didn't Teach Me in Sunday School ... About the Period of the Kings."

In "Stuff They Didn't Teach Me in Sunday School ... About the Prophets," the fifth DVD in the series, Bruce explains how the prophets of the Old Testament were specialists when it came to spotting and condemning sin. As God's bold emissaries, they were to call His people "on the carpet" for their wanton ways, seeking, if possible, their repentance and heartfelt allegiance to the King of kings

Coming Soon - The Fourth Annual Men's NetWork North American Fishing Tournament

Yes, this is the announcement you've been waiting for: online registration for the Fourth Annual Men's NetWork North American Fishing Tournament opens April 2! Then, beginning Monday, April 30, the tournament kicks into high gear on lakes, rivers, ponds and creeks across the United States and Canada.

Entering the tournament is as cheap as ever: the registration fee is still a mere $10. There are eleven fish categories eligible for weekly prizes. First-time weekly winners receive a Men's NetWork fishing tournament T-shirt and a $10 Bass Pro ShopsŪ gift card; repeat winners receive the $10 gift card, (so if you win just once, you make back your entry fee. After that, it's pure profit!). Having said this, we do know it's not everybody's gift to catch fish when they go fishing, so we've got a category for those guys, too: "Strangest Non-fish Thing Caught." The bar is pretty low on this one; it has been won by a stick more than once. That's right: a stick.

Everything you need to know about the tournament: the rules, registration details, how to submit catches, sign-up goodies and, of course, prizes, including a Grand Prize of $500 (did that get your attention?) is posted on the Men's NetWork website.

Depression: Understanding the Pieces of the Puzzle

Major depression is a cruel and horribly sad disruption of life. Most of us, by the grace of God, are sufficiently resilient to endure small setbacks, reversals and even periods of discouragement and loss. Despair and clinical depression, however, dwarf any sadness the average person experiences. Depression is a life-crippling hurt that can seal baptized Christians into cocoons of hopelessness, isolating them from family, life, health and love. And, as if that weren't sufficiently devastating, depression can and does derail countless numbers of God's children from prayer, regular worship and finding comfort through the means of grace. Depression is a medical diagnosis with emotional, relational, vocational and spiritual consequences.

What we believe about another person's despair will influence greatly how we care for our brother or sister in Christ. Many of us upon learning that another is suffering with depression are often remarkably nonchalant about the news.

The Project Connect book, Depression: Understanding the Pieces of the Puzzle offers insights into this critical topic.

Bounty Hunting

It seems as if some NFL notables now join Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Lee Majors, Boba Fett, Autobot Lockdown, Homer Simpson and Ned Flanders as famous bounty hunters. We know that "art imitates life," especially when one follows the problems among Dog -- the Bounty Hunter -- and his sons, Duane Lee and Leland, but who would have thought professional football players would be the next cast of characters to imitate art?

Not that bounty hunting is bad. There has always been a need for people to track down and bring fugitive criminals to justice, but for football players to do this? "Say it ain't so, Joe!"

Now compared to the issues of world peace, solving hunger or rising oil prices, the fact that NFL players actually injure opponents -- and get paid for it -- probably isn't that important. But I think it ranks right up there with the 1919 Chicago White Sox, the 2006 Tour de France and the ever-present (but never proven) professional boxing scandals.

For me, every professional sports scandal chips away at the integrity of the sport, the players and the nation. A nation that produces a "win-at-all-costs" mentality will eventually produce bounty hunters and cheats. Once it is tolerated at the professional level, the college level isn't far behind; then come the high school and, eventually, the sandlots and school playgrounds. Our children will grow up with a win-at-all-costs, anything-goes, rules-are-for-losers mentality that will translate into larger issues for society than the occasional coach suspended for a year without salary.

Men, we need to elevate honesty. We need to take the high ground, offering positive examples of honesty in action where truthfulness is valued. We need to be savvy to how our attitudes and choices impact those around us. And they do impact those around us.

We need to set an example for the next generation to follow.

Tall order? You bet. That what makes it so tough -- and so necessary -- to pursue.

Now this really puts me in a quandary. What will I watch come Sunday afternoon in the fall?
